Cities in the international context

Cities in the international context

Globalisation reinforces the linkage between global and local stakes and gives a more and more important role to cities. It is only in this world context that urbanisation is now intelligible , as shown by the UN cities summit (Habitat II, Istanbul – June 1996) and the 25th United Nations General Assembly special session (Habitat II + 5, New York – June 2001). The Institute of Cities endeavours to have it better understood and better known. It sets a permanent watch on the urban field along the three main lines of international relations: multilateral dialogue, co-operation with developing countries, and European policies. It acts to further the presence of French urban actors on the international stage and to give them easy access to international information. For international authorities, it is a gate giving access to French specialised networks. The Institute of Cities organises debates on urban affairs before the government determines its position, particularly in the context of the discussions in process about the future of the European Union. That is why it is in charge of leading the “Cities and local authorities” work group inside the French committee for the World Summit for Sustainable Development (Rio + 10, Johannesburg – August/September 2002).
