Cities and ageing

“Old age as unthought of urban tradition” R. Baudoui
“The overthought of old age in gerontological policies, hindering the insertion of the elderly in the city” G. Grucher
In the context of rapid change, the ageing of populations can become one of the main vectors of evolution in the ways of living the city.If it is undoubtedly important to identify adapted responses to the specific problem of the housing of the elderly and the equipment and services they require, it seems quite as fundamental to protect their experience of the city and to keep them in touch with populations from other age groups. Beyond the problems of accessibility, security, and mobility lie those of the design of equipment and places where people from different generations, with very different social practices and lifestyles, can remain close, in order to avoid creating new forms of segregation.Ageing is one of the major challenges for France in the years to come !The Institute of Cities focuses on three lines of action:· integration of ageing in the urban project and in global processes of local development,· global handling of dependency at the local scale (management of the very elderly and problems of associated disability)· anticipation of the city of tomorrow
